What Is 10DLC? Business Texting Registration

Published November 8, 2024 · Updated August 24, 2026 · by the Vox Tandem team

10 Ten

The number of digits. An area code and a number — the kind every business already has.

D Digit

Not a name, not a sender ID. Carriers register the actual number the message comes from.

LC Long Code

Industry shorthand for a normal phone number, as opposed to the five- and six-digit short codes big brands rent.

The whole term, decoded: an ordinary ten-digit business number, registered.

If your business sends text messages from a regular phone number — appointment reminders, “your order’s ready,” quick replies to customers — US carriers require that number to be registered under a system called 10DLC. Unregistered business texting isn’t a gray area anymore: since the carriers’ final enforcement deadlines passed, unregistered traffic is filtered or blocked outright, usually silently. Your messages simply stop arriving, and nobody tells you.

This guide explains what 10DLC actually is, why it exists, and what registration involves — in plain English, from a carrier that files these registrations every week.

The name, decoded

10DLC stands for 10-digit long code — a standard ten-digit phone number, like your business line, used for texting. It’s the alternative to short codes (those five-digit numbers big brands text from, which cost thousands per month) and toll-free texting.

The appeal of 10DLC is obvious: your customers see your real business number. The same number they call is the number that texts “see you tomorrow at 2.” That trust is exactly why carriers regulate it.

Why carriers built a registration system

Text messages get read. Open rates for SMS embarrass every other channel — which made business numbers irresistible to spammers and scammers. Carriers responded by requiring A2P registration (application-to-person — any automated or business-originated texting) so they can tell legitimate businesses from bad actors.

Registration answers two questions:

  • Who are you? Your business registers as a brand: legal name, EIN, address, website. This is identity vetting — proof you’re a real company.
  • What do you send? Your texting use case registers as a campaign: appointment reminders, customer service replies, order notifications, marketing with consent, and so on.

Registered traffic travels with better deliverability and higher throughput. Unregistered traffic gets filtered, surcharged, or blocked — and repeated violations can get a number flagged in ways that are painful to undo.

What this means for a small business

Practically, three things:

  1. You can’t just start texting from your landline. The number must be text-enabled by a provider and registered before campaigns flow reliably.
  2. The paperwork is real but manageable — a brand registration, a campaign describing your messages, and sample content. Done properly, it’s a one-time exercise. Our walkthrough: the step-by-step registration guide.
  3. Compliance continues after registration. Consent, opt-outs, and message content still matter — that’s the SMS compliance checklist.

How long does it take?

Brand and campaign reviews pass through carrier vetting partners, and timelines vary with how clean the submission is — mismatched EINs and vague campaign descriptions are the classic delays. When we handle registration for Business SMS customers, our submissions typically clear in about 72 hours, because we’ve learned exactly what the reviewers want to see the first time.

Do you have to deal with this yourself?

No — and honestly, you shouldn’t have to. When Vox Tandem text-enables your number, we run the whole registration: brand vetting, campaign classification, sample messages, carrier review. You answer a few questions about your business and what you plan to send; we do the rest and text-enable the number you already own.

The short version: 10DLC is the price of admission for trustworthy business texting. Pay it once, properly, and your messages arrive with your name on them. Skip it, and you’re whispering into a void that looks exactly like a working phone.
